Hanohano Outrigger Crystal Pier Ironman race 2008

Hey Sports Fans!
SCORA kicks off its Outrigger 6 person of Iron Season in San Diego with a
stellar race hosted by Hanohano Outrigger. Weather was perfect, even though
a few of us were wondering exactly what possible threat the dark clouds were
going to bring that were hovering due west at about 9am. It turned out to be
nothing as the sun won that little argument. 61 canoes left the beach at 830
to line up alongside each other, inside Mission Bay for the novice, 16 and
19 and under divisions. Their course ran (well they didn't "run" in the
definition of as on foot- so don't get confused- Im using the term "ran"
merely as a description of what they did.. never mind, let me rephrase)
Their course went along the bay towards South Shores along side SeaWorld and
then back to the beach. An outstanding performance by all the novices in
this, their first race of our season. Congratulations to the winners in the
mens novice spec: 1- Imua 2-Dana 3- Pale Kai;
mens bradley 1-Ka Nai'a 2-Kai Elua 3-Kapua Mau
womens spec: 1-Dana 2- Santa Barbara 3- Marina;
womens bradley: 1- Santa Barbara 2-Dana 3-Imua
coed: 1- Ikuna Koa 2- Dana 3- Lokahi
16 boys: 1-Team AZ 2-Hanohano 3-Kahakai
16 girls: 1- Oceanside 2- Hanohano
16 coed: 1- Ikuna Koa 2- Na leo o ke Kai
19 men: 1- Hokuloa 2-NAC
No 19 women inside

At about 10am 70 canoes paraded out to the open ocean for women and coed
race. Hoping for a nice easy 10 mile event we were pleasantly given a course
that tested our endurance, keeping in sync with the defination of what a true "ironman" event
should do, and raced a 13 mile season opener.

It must have been an exciting battle up front with the leaders finishing
within 9tenths of a second from each other- with the gals from NAC (1.40.01)
inching out race host Hanohano (1.40.10) for the gold. Not all that far
behind, and not giving 2nd place any room to relax, was Lanakila's women
(1.40.35).
Awesome racing by the 3 masters teams all finishing in the top 10: Lanakila,
Imua and Oceanside, 1-2-3 respectively.
The Bradley division also had some fine racing with 1st place Hanohano
taking back their lead after the second turn from 2nd place San Diego,
followed by 3rd place Imua.

    I enjoyed reading the highlights to the Crystal Pier Race. When your busy &/or getting ready you can miss parts of the race. When your racing you miss the highlights to your race ie at the turn and finish. Great race by all!!!
